About the Society of the Sacred Heart

We are the United States - Canada Province of the Society of the Sacred Heart, part of an international congregation of Catholic women. Founded in 1800 by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, the Society of the Sacred Heart has more than 2,500 members in provinces in 40 countries. In the United States and Canada, we have more than 320 members in a wide variety of ministries. Our charism, our mission, is to discover and reveal the love of the Heart of Jesus in our world.

Our founder, St. Madeleine Sophie, had two abiding goals:

  • To reveal to the world a God who loves us
  • To educate children to be a source of transformation in their world.

Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) today continue in her mission. Our schools provide a superlative education to both boys and girls. And we consistently look for the answer to the question of “who is being left out?” in the world today. For us, to educate is an act of justice.

Religious of the Sacred Heart are called to live lives that are at once wholly contemplative and wholly apostolic. Our ministry is shaped by our prayer and vice versa. As RSCJ today contemplate the pierced Heart of Jesus in the broken heart of humanity, our focus is on compassionate solidarity with the poor, educating to reconciliation and work for justice and peace.
