The Academy of the Sacred Heart and the Rosary Sacred Heart Alumnae Association are pleased to announce Sister Jane McKinlay, RSCJ, as recipient of the 2018 Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat Award. This award is given to a Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) who has contributed greatly to the needs of the students and the Rosary community.

Sunday, September 23, was full of emotions as descendants of known enslaved persons by the Society of the Sacred Heart gathered at St. Charles Borromeo Church and Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, to remember and honor their ancestors.

This gathering, formally named “We Speak Your Names,” marked the first of the Society’s efforts towards reconciliation for their complicity and participation in the sin of slavery.

On September 18, 2018, St. Philomena School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, formally entered the application process to become a member of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the United States and Canada.

The Faithful Companions of Jesus (fcJ), an international order of Roman Catholic sisters living and ministering in Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas with headquarters in England, opened St. Philomena School in 1953. While the fcJ sisters operate schools internationally, St. Philomena School is their only educational ministry in the United States.

On Friday, September 14, 2018 students, faculty, parents, alumnae/i, RSCJ and friends of the Sacred Heart gathered at the Academy of the Sacred Heart (ASH) in St. Charles, Missouri, to celebrate Mass in honor of its 200th anniversary.

Archbishop Robert Carlson presided in a packed gym decorated in honor of Philippine. Students and alum of ASH participated from greeting, carrying offerings, serving and leading music.

On Wednesday, September 12, 45 students, faculty and staff who represent six of the seven Sacred Heart schools in France arrived in St. Louis in order to participate in the Sacred Heart Global Service Day and explore where Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne lived and worked.

The group spent several days immersed in the life of Philippine with a two-day trip to visit Sugar Creek, Kansas, and Mound City, Kansas, a trip to Philippine's Shrine in St. Charles, and a day trip to Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant, Missouri.

The recent news detailing the extensive and sometimes brutal sexual abuse committed by Catholic priests in the United States has left us at the Leadership Conference of Women Religious sickened and ashamed of the church we love, trusted, and have committed our lives to serve. We weep and grieve with all who over the decades have been victimized by sexual predators within the faith community and feel their pain as our own. We recognize that the damage done to many is irreparable.

Friday, August 10, sisters from all over the country, including several RSCJ, gathered at the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri, to participate in the action "Being in Communion: Standing Against Racism." This action was a part of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) Assembly and included song and several minutes of silence and prayer.

On Friday, July 27, RSCJ and Sacred Heart alum, friends and family members gathered at the Shrine of Saint Philippine in St. Charles, Missouri, to celebrate a liturgy and blessing of leadership. Under the leadership of Provincial Sheila Hammond, RSCJ, the Society bid farewell to the outgoing team, Margaret (Meg) Causey, RSCJ; Anne-Marie Conn, RSCJ; Mary Finlayson, RSCJ; and Diana Wall, RSCJ, and welcomed the incoming team, Donna Collins, RSCJ; Maureen Glavin, RSCJ; Theresa Moser, RSCJ; and Diane Roche, RSCJ. The new leadership team took office August 1.

On Thursday, July 19, 2018, hundreds of people packed into the Missouri History Museum to hear Cokie Roberts' presentation "Extending America's Promise: Pioneering Women." Roberts' presentation was the culmination of the History Museum's Crossing Frontiers lecture series, which celebrated women who have crossed both physical and metaphorical frontiers, and broadened horizons for women. This event also marked the beginning of the 2018 Frontiers Conference sponsored by the Society of the Sacred Heart. Many RSCJ, Sacred Heart alums and friends, and members of the public attended.

Sister Pat Murphy receives Anton Boisen Award

At its recent annual conference, the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) presented its 2018 Anton Boisen Professional Service Award to Patricia Murphy, PhD, BCC, who is associate professor in the Departments of Religion, Health, and Human Values and Psychiatry, as well as staff chaplain in Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago. The Boisen Award is presented to APC board-certified chaplains who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in professional chaplaincy and make unique contributions to contemporary chaplaincy care.
