SOPHIE BARAT HOUSE, (1719 Napoleon Ave., New Orleans, LA 70115), founded in 1994, is a ministry of the Religious of the Sacred Heart in an easily accessible neighborhood of New Orleans. Taking our inspiration from our foundress, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, we seek, with help of others who choose to collaborate with us, to be a conduit of God’s love for men and women. Inspired by the Constitutions of the Society of the Sacred Heart, the “community takes to heart the need to create a climate which favors experience of God, sharing among ourselves and with others”. In an atmosphere of peace, hospitality, and prayer, we offer opportunities to reflect on or Christian lives. Contact us at 504-899–6027. Meet our spiritual directors.

PROGRAMS: 2018 – 2019

CENTERING PRAYER (October – June) is that prayer in which one rests in God through the quieting of one’s mind and heart. Praying in this way with others on the First Fridays (9:30 a.m.) is offered under the direction of Sister Jane McKinlay. $10 monthly.

PRISON MINISTRY: Sister Judy Vollbrecht meets weekly with women in the county jail for reflection and prayer. If you know of a woman who is in prison or jail who wants spiritual accompaniment, contact Sister Judy at 504-899–6027.

EXPLORE LUKE’S GOSPEL: Bible Study focusing on putting this year’s cycle C Sunday readings in context of the Gospel from which they are excerpted. Fall classes will focus on the infancy narratives – stories of Jesus found only in this Gospel. After a break for the holidays the focus will be on the message of Jesus as the author presents it within the context of the community for which it was written and their challenges.

Meetings on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month beginning October 8, (holiday breaks Christmas, New Year’s, Mardi Gras, and Easter). 1719 Napoleon. 10:00 a.m. Class dates: Oct. 8, 22; Nov.12, 26; Dec. 10; Jan. 14, 28; Feb. 11; March 11, 25; April 8. No class April 22 (Easter Monday); meet April 29 (5th Monday); close May 13th.

Bring your own Bible. Leader: Maureen Chicoine, RSCJ, who has been doing a local Bible study since 2014 and has a background in lifetime Scripture study, has been leading groups in parishes for over 40 years. Contact Maureen at 909-641-7871.

TEMENOS (monthly, September – May) (4 women’s groups, 1 men’s group) combine presentations on aspects of the faith journey with quiet time and reverent sharing. We find that hearing others speak of the ways God is meeting them creates rapport as well as support for the journey. Facilitators: Sister Jane McKinlay and John Gniady. $10 a session.
